Media language in Ghost Ship

Updated: Nov 2, 2022

How does the director use Media Language to communicate messages and engage the audience?

The director uses mise en scene to engage the audience throughout Ghost Ship. The use of costume is used to foreshadow and enhance ideas of the plot and characters. For example, the lead female singer is in a red dress with red gloves. The colour, red, symbolises themes of love and beauty. however red contrast with the theme of danger foreshadowing the deaths of the guest on board. this engages the audience as it makes them suggest that this woman has villain-like characteristics. In addition, this is supported through her wearing red gloves contrasting with the rest of the crew, which are wearing white. The white gloves on the crew represents their innocence and purity implying they are victims in this crime. The woman wearing red gloves infers she is responsible for the crime scene and that she is a murderer. The woman further wear heavy jewelry stating her greed for wealth and beauty.

Furthermore, the costume of the young girl implies her purity and innocence. The young girl wears a light blow ribbon in her hair. This suggests a her delicate and pure nature of being young. the light blue illustrates an angelic imagery foreshadowing her ghost. This suggest to the audience her youth and isolation whilst on the ship making us sympathies her situation. the crew also wear the same uniform to show their unity in the film. They are all wearing white suits, gloves and bow ties to imply the wealth and community feel. This contrast with the other uniform with the opposing character which are wearing grey suits with slicked back hair. This builds a negative image to the audience creating tension as they don't belong on the ship.

Camerawork is significantly used to engage and communicate to the audience. At the beginning, a crane shot is used to establish the ship. all the shots are long shots to convey a slow pace of the ships movements establishing the guests to be relaxed on holiday. The long shots establish location to the audience. in addition, a shot is used to focus on the wire blurring the background. This creates a sense of urgency to the audience as they know what is going to happen to the guests. The shots eventually become shorter to imply chaos and the speed of the wire.
