The Titanic uses mise-en-scene to portray conventions of a tragedy/love movie. The use of costumes allows the audience to establish the class between the two characters. Jack is seen in a cotton beige shirt contrasting with Rose who is wearing a delicate lace material. The lace links to the stereotype of women being delicate and fragile which states the era the film possible could be set in, in the 1920s roughly when the Titanic sunk. The lace is a highly rich and wealthy material contrasting with his cotton beige shirt. This suggests that Jack is working class and Rose is of a higher class. In addition, Rose is wearing jewellery in the poster which is seen to shine illustrating her wealth as well as her beauty.
The mise-en-scene of the ship, the ‘Titanic’, is presented in the poster. The Titanic is positioned in the centre between Rose and Jack to imply its’s danger. The writing above, ‘nothing go on Earth, could come between them’, suggests their close relationship which does end due to the ship sinking. The ship being positioned this way foreshadows that their love will not last resulting in death ad separation. They further use camera angle of a low shot of the ship to portray its dominance throughout the film. The low shot exaggerates the danger and power the ship has which adds to the shock of it sinking in rea life.
Facial expressions are conveyed to show the audience the relationship between the two characters. The proxemics between Jack and Rose gives insight to an intermate relationship. This is further supported through their facial expressions. Jack is hugging Rose and looking down to show his lack of control due to the patriarchal society. Jack is presented to support and protect Rose. Rose is looking away from Jack with a sad expression to infer their love to end in separation. The hug is symbol to their separation foreshadow the event of Jack’s death. The use of the clouds and blue sky connotates to the imagery link to the ship and religion. The sky links to ideas of the ship to symbolises the ocean and a journey between the growth of the characters. However, it can further illustrate connotations of heaven and unity for both characters. However, Jack dies in the movie so him hugging rose shows they are no longer together, and he is in heaven. Therefore, Rose is looking away with loss to state that she is grieving their love and relationship that wasn’t meant to be.
